The Impact of Economic Changes on Our Pricing: Tariffs, Exchange Rates & Kiln Price Hikes

Happy 2025, everyone! I hope your year is off to a great start. As we move through the first few months of the year, there are a few important updates I want to share regarding the current economic situation and how it may affect pricing on some of our products.

The Canadian Dollar & Price Increases

It’s been noticeable that the Canadian dollar continues to fall, while silver and gold prices continue to rise. While I’ve been able to keep most of my pricing reflective of a US exchange rate that’s about 15 cents lower, there’s still ongoing uncertainty that could affect costs moving forward.

The US and Canada are currently threatening to impose 25% tariffs on each other’s goods, which could have significant impacts. In preparation, I’ve been stocking up on tools and silver findings that are likely to be hit by the proposed tariffs. However, due to the fluctuation in the exchange rate, I will need to raise prices slightly to reflect these changes. Prices seem to increase every time I receive stock, and if the tariff is passed, I may have to stop carrying certain findings and tools altogether, as they could become too expensive.

That said, I’m actively exploring alternatives, including sourcing from other countries and locally, to mitigate these potential price hikes.

Metal Clay Remains Unaffected for Now

On a positive note, most of the metal clay I carry remains exempt from these increases, as raw materials are often not subject to duty. This only applies to the proposed tariff changes announced on February 3rd, after Canadian retaliation was suggested.

Upcoming Kiln Price Increases

In addition to these uncertainties, the price of SC2 and SC3 kilns will be increasing by 13% starting February 17th, as announced by the manufacturer. Caldera kilns will also experience a price hike at the end of February. If you’ve been considering purchasing a kiln, I highly recommend placing your order soon to lock in the current prices.
